This comprehensive book covers all the details needed for organic gardening, from soil composition, companion plants, timing of planting and harvesting to how to attract and repel birds and insects and keep a healthy balance in the garden.

This book has much useful information. But do NOT buy the Kindle version. You can not print the crop charts from Kindle. The crop charts are probably the best feature of the book. I had to buy the paper book after already purchasing the Kindle.

Jeavons has tried to arrange information that you can laminate and use in the field, but no way to do this with Kindle. Kindle needs to rethink their tight fisted application prohibitions.

I bought this to replace my old copy that got worn out from use. The idea of creating a system that requires NO external input is fascinating — grow vegis, calories, and compost. I didn’t appreciate being scolded for wanting to buy peat moss and other off farm inputs, but I can overlook this because Jeavons’ ideas kept challenging me.

His calculations are a great starting point for many gardens. But, I’m old and impatient. I’ll try adopting more of his ideas right after I add all the nice dark bagged compost and peat moss to my desert soil. I bought it for the very helpful tables, which show spacing and space needed and yield of various crops. I was tempted by the kindle version because it was a few dollars cheaper, but regret not having purchased the paperback instead as the tables as difficult to read even with my ipad kindle app.

I am an urban farmer. The sheer volume of practical information in this book is amazing. It includes not only how to prepare the soil, but at what temperature specific seeds are able to germinate. This means you don’t have to plant things several times to get a crop, because you just check the soil temperature and you know whether the seeds will germinate or not.

It gives you charts that tell you how close together you can plant each vegetable, how much harvest you can get from a sq. It makes suggestions on crop rotation, so that you maintain the fertility of your soil and continue to maximize your harvest. It also gives you suggestions about how much of each crop one person would likely eat in a year, so you know how much to plant. The companion planting suggestions are great.

I used to have trouble with tomato worms. My tomatoes grow feet tall and I have gotten 35 lbs of tomatoes off one tomato plant.

How to Grow More Vegetables, Ninth Edition

This book contains information that will help any person build self sufficiency in a small area. We all should be more and more aware of the impact we have on the planet and do our part to promote a healthier future.

I am applying the methods described in the book in jore Florida. The principles hold true. One person found this helpful. Enjoyed this book and the author has some great ideas for closed-loop self-sufficient gardening.

He approaches gardening as an engineering problem, maximizing caloric output by raising higher calorie grains and beans and dedicating many beds to plants for compost. Most hobby gardeners would find this approach takes away from the simple joy of caring for plants and the delight in fresh picked tomatoes and squash.

I would recommend this book because there is a lot of good information that you could cherry-pick for use in your home garden. Homesteader types might use this approach to attain self-sufficiency.
