Again, his later stuff is more visceral, this collection of short stories seemed superficial in comparison to nousebreaker. Everyone can see it. I have a hard time getting into short stories, but this felt like a novel in hosebreaker and pieces. He finally eviscerates his wife and children in Yates like fashion, which reminds us all just how out of touch and self centered he really is. He works with people that could be considered worse and then my country is lead by a bunch of crooks and idiots —except for the president.

Shares Facebook Twitter I think John Cheever and his short stories, and even his novels have been waiting for me to discover them. But only a little better, and only for a short while. There is even a sense that it is worth stealing some millions, when all you have ahead is the perspective of a few years behind bars.
Unfortunately for Johnny Hake, he is not a sociopath. It really made me think about how hard, lonely and boring it was to be a middle class woman in the 50’s. I looked at the paper. There have been various riffs on this line from Cheever: He starts to behave like person being eaten alive by guilt.
For years I avoided Cheever, I thought he was stuffy and old school, not prescient enough, the same goes with Updike, and even Yates. He ends the story exactly as he began it, talking to himself in the dark. It might not be worse different, it might even be better different, but your original longing is ultimately quashed, because the place no longer exists in your mind, having been replaced by reality.
For me this story raises a question- – If the petty thief is to blame and needs to be punished, what about the big sharks? No matter how much money the Warburtons have, there is always something to be worried about: It comes through in the way he describes trees so well, and smells and breezes and the ocean.
