The author builds the way up from geometric considerations to eventually deriving the div, grad, curl and laplacian operators of vector calculus hence the title.
I ran across the Vector Function derivatives in the title in a physics book. There are no discussion topics on this book yet. Want to Read saving…. Very unclear derivations at times and very big logical steps missing. As a second point, I will say that applications to other subjects would have been a pleasant and welcome change from the many applications to electromagnetism.
I recommend the Physics undergrad read this the summer before their first year of university studies. So overall its an intuitive first introduction to the subject that requires elementary calculus as the only prerequisite. Jun 16, Adam Lantos rated it really liked it. These restrictions are just enough to justify a 4-star rating, although I would gladly give it an easy 5-star rating if it had just a bit more examples.

This was a great overview of vector calculus, as well as an interesting investigation into how to find the electric field.
Readers just need to know some basic calculus and a glimpse of multivariable calculus to understand it all. Very easy to grasp, provided with figures, and links most of the topics to their applications in real life.
Div, grad, curl, and all that : an informal text on vector calculus / H.M. Schey – Details – Trove
I didn’t discover it until the end of my course in vector calculus, and I wish I had used it as a companion piece for the course. One of the most unhelpful physics books i’ve read. A short and concise book for getting intuition on vector calculus as a tool for physics. A decent understanding of trigonometry and single variable calculus are mandatory prerequisites. Limited to three dimensions, limited in its rigor, but within these limits crystal-clear about the how and why of Div, Grad, Curl and the equations in xurl these derivatives occur.
Along the way you also learn theorems that are not so closely tied to the goal. Nov 25, Teressa marked it as to-read. To see what your friends thought of this book, please sign up. Jun 17, Nick Black rated it it was amazing Recommended to Nick by: Exercises at the end of each chapter are a must. Steve rated it really liked it Aug 19, Don’t miss out on IV though: Good start before schry full fledged mathematical formulation of electromagnetism.
A lot of meaningful things could be added as there are furl lot of topics that beg dchey this kind of basic yet highly intuitive and pictorial exposition.
Although the author has justified the existence of the 4th edition largely due to the insertion of more examples, I still think that they are not enough. This book satisfies the desire for derivation and motivation over rigor.
This book is definitely no substitute for more rigorous proofs and derivations, but it would be a great refresher, and is a perfect companion piece schet quite a few subjects. It starts out by explicitly setting a goal to find the electric field due to any distribution of charges, grzd then it approaches the goal step by step, introducing the concepts of vector calculus to overcome the obstacles one by one, in a very logical progression.

Div grad curl was an incredible experience to me. While the small size makes for a quick and easy read, it certainly would not hurt if the next edition was bumped up to pages. Arc rated it really liked it Jun 25, Ahhh, what a happy little book. Want to Read Currently Reading Read.

I sure wish I’d had it about ten years before Rhett recommended it in an LJ comment, iirc. Sep 10, Travis Johnson rated it it was amazing. Sep 22, Kourtney rated it it was amazing.
The exercises represent a good range of difficulty, and the informal grwd of writing makes the concepts easy to grasp in the absence of classroom instruction.
I really dig it. Apr 24, Andrew rated it really liked it Recommends it for: Jun 25, Guillaume Koenig rated it it was amazing. I also found the practice problems to be really helpful, as they are not overly-difficult and tend to reinforce the most cul concepts.
And the reason is that most of them are trivial. No trivia or quizzes yet. Jul 07, Frank rated it it was amazing Shelves: Just a moment while we sign you in to your Goodreads curk.
