The clues are wonderfully varied; and their allocating masterfully timed. Is it because it’s actually too high brow?
Long ago I quit beating myself up for not understanding a certain tex My disappointment in The Following Story is of course only a temporary arrangement constructed as a forgettable dream here in my consciousness. I had to read the passage again to understand that view spoiler [all those people, including Herman, were on their last trip before the imminent end cers their lives. The translation is extraordinary; I do not believe the prose of the original could be any more luminous and delightful.
It is that tone – that implication that the reader is in on some divine magical truth – that shines out, and to me the tone is more important than the style.
